Who Brodersen is, and why engineers specify it

Brodersen has been building industrial control hardware from Copenhagen since 1969. It is not a general automation conglomerate — the company concentrates on one problem: getting reliable data out of, and control into, sites that nobody is standing next to. Substations, pumping stations, wellheads, trackside cabinets.

That focus shows in the engineering decisions. Where a general-purpose PLC treats communications as an add-on card, Brodersen's RTU32 platform treats the protocol stack as the product. IEC 60870-5-101 and -104, IEC 61850 client and server, DNP3 including WITS slave, Modbus, OPC-UA, MQTT and more ship inside the same device, unlocked by licence rather than by replacing hardware. Protocols and standards supported

Drivers are resident in the firmware on both series. Enabling an additional protocol is a licence key, not a hardware change — which matters when a SCADA master gets replaced mid-project and the interface requirement shifts.

How a typical deployment is structured

  1. Field devices, sensors and distributed I/O connect to the RTU over serial, Ethernet or the LB2 I/O bus.
  2. The RTU concentrates and timestamps that data locally, applying any IEC 61131-3 control logic running on the device itself.
  3. A single protocol interface — typically IEC 60870-5-104 or DNP3 — presents the site to the SCADA master at the control centre.
  4. An HTML5 HMI generated by the RTU's own web server gives local staff a view of the site from a browser, with no separate panel hardware.

Certification and OT cybersecurity compliance

Across the GCC, cybersecurity has moved from a design preference to a procurement gate. Saudi Arabia's National Cybersecurity Authority issued the Operational Technology Cybersecurity Controls (OTCC-1:2022) as a mandatory baseline for operators of critical OT environments — energy, water, transport and industry — and the framework translates IEC 62443 into national compliance language. In the UAE, comparable expectations reach field devices through utility and national infrastructure requirements.

For anyone specifying an outstation, the practical consequence is that the device's own certification status now forms part of the audit trail. Brodersen holds UL certification to IEC 62443-4-1 (secure development lifecycle) and IEC 62443-4-2 (component security requirements), alongside:

Specifying control hardware for Gulf conditions

Every datasheet in this industry is written for European conditions, and that gap causes real field failures here. Three things are worth checking before you commit a part number to a bid.

Ambient temperature is not enclosure temperature. A device rated to a given ambient will run considerably hotter inside a sealed enclosure in direct sun. Thermal management of the cabinet — not the specification of the device — is usually what determines whether hardware survives its second summer. Plan the derating calculation at design stage, not after the first failure.

Coastal installations corrode faster than the datasheet implies. Salt-laden humidity along the Gulf Coast attacks connectors and unprotected boards. Ask about conformal coating options and specify enclosure ingress protection against the actual site, not the nominal one.

Fine dust defeats filtration designed for European particulates. Sealed enclosures with passive cooling generally outperform filtered and ventilated designs at inland sites, provided the thermal budget is calculated honestly.

What is the difference between RTU32M and RTU32N?

RTU32M is modular and scales from 8 to over 1,000 I/O with redundant CPU and power supply options. RTU32N is a compact all-in-one unit with onboard communications and a built-in display, expandable with the same I/O modules. Both run identical firmware, the same WorkSuite programming environment and the same protocol drivers — so a project can mix both without maintaining two skill sets.

Can a Brodersen RTU replace an existing SCADAPack, RTU560 or ACE3600 installation?

In most cases yes, because the RTU32 platform supports the protocol suites those devices typically use — IEC 60870-5-101 and -104, DNP3 and Modbus. A migration still needs a point-list mapping exercise and a cutover plan. Send us the existing configuration and we will assess it before you commit to a retrofit.

Does Brodersen hardware meet Saudi NCA OTCC requirements?

OTCC-1:2022 applies to the operator, not to any single device — compliance is assessed across governance, defence, resilience and third-party domains. What device certification does is shorten the evidence path for the technical controls. Brodersen holds UL certification to IEC 62443-4-1 and 4-2, which is the component-level standard the framework draws from. We can supply the certificates for your compliance file.

How is the RTU programmed?

Through Brodersen WorkSuite, which supports all five IEC 61131-3 languages: ladder diagram, function block diagram, structured text, instruction list and sequential function chart. Function blocks can also be written in C and C++. A trial version limited to 40 I/O is available for evaluation.

Do I need a separate HMI panel?

Often not. The RTU32 web server generates an HTML5 HMI that can be published as pages viewable from a browser on a tablet, phone or laptop — no additional panel hardware or SCADA client licence. RTU32N also carries a built-in display for local values including digitals, counters, analogues, supply voltage and internal temperature.

Can I add protocols after installation?

Yes. All drivers are already resident in the firmware. Adding one is a licence key applied through the RTU's web interface. The same applies to CPU speed, RAM allocation and tag count on RTU32M — which is why the platform suits projects where scope grows after the first phase.
